Link Studio docs › Tracking
What is an event?
An event is one thing that happened: one link click, one page view, one button click, one sale. Every number in Link Studio is built from events, and your plan counts them.
One event is one moment
Each time someone does something Link Studio can see, it records one event: what happened, when, on which page, and which link brought them there.
An event is never a total. Ten people opening your homepage make ten events. One person opening it ten times makes ten events too.
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Event | One thing that happened, at one moment. |
| Visitor | One person on one browser. One visitor usually makes many events. |
| Visit | One visitor’s page views in a row. After 30 minutes without a page view, their next one starts a new visit. |
What creates an event
| Event | Recorded when | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Link click | Someone opens one of your short links or scans its QR code. | Your bio link opened |
| Page view | A page with your tracking snippet loads, or the address changes in a single page app. | Checkout |
| Button click | Someone clicks a link or button on your site. It is named by its text. | Add to cart |
| Named moment | Someone uses a button, link or form you tagged with data-ls-event, or your code calls track. | Booked call |
| Tool event | A tool you connected in Add-ons reports a sale, a trial, a subscription or a sign up. | A paid order |
Link clicks work on their own. Page views, button clicks and named moments need page tracking on your site. Tool events need a connected tool.
One visit, event by event
Someone taps the link in your bio, looks around your site and buys. Here is everything Link Studio records:
| What they do | Events |
|---|---|
| Tap your bio link | 1 link click |
| Land on your homepage | 1 page view |
| Click Pricing in your menu | 1 button click |
| Land on your pricing page | 1 page view |
| Click Start trial, tagged as the Started trial moment | 1 button click and 1 named moment |
| Pay, and your shop reports the order | 1 tool event |
That is 7 events from 1 visitor in 1 visit. Every event from their browser carries the bio link. To credit the sale to it too, pass the link on at checkout, as shown in Signed in people and sales.
What an event holds
| Detail | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Kind | Link click, page view, button click, named moment, or the tool it came from. |
| Name | The page name, the button’s text or the name you gave the moment. |
| Time | When it happened. |
| Visitor | A random ID kept in the visitor’s browser, so their events line up. |
| Page | The page address, without its query string. |
| Link | The link that brought them, if they clicked one in the last 30 days. |
| Campaign tags | The utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on the address they landed on. |
| Referrer | The website that sent them, on the first page they see. |
| Place | Their country, plus their region and city when they are known. |
| Device | Phone, tablet or computer, and its system. |
| User | Your own user ID for them, once you call identify. |
| Properties | On named moments only: up to 20 details you send, like plan or seats. |
How events count toward your plan
Every event counts as one tracked event: link clicks, page views, button clicks, named moments and tool events alike.
- Monthly. The count resets on the 1st. Events count in the month they happened, so when a connected tool brings in your history, only this month’s events count.
- Per workspace. Each workspace has its own count.
- Once. If the same event arrives twice, it is stored once. This happens when a page’s name loads late, or when a tool reports the same sale again.
- Your own visits too. Your clicks and page views count like anyone else’s, including your site running on your own computer.
Some actions make more than one event:
- A button or link tagged with
data-ls-eventmakes a button click and a named moment. - A sign up from a sign-up tool makes two events: one sign up, and one named by how they signed up. It makes three when you track plans.
These never count:
- Bots, crawlers and link previews, like the preview a chat app shows when you paste a link.
- Pages your browser loads ahead of time in case you open them.
- Visits from a website you blocked.
- Clicks inside anything marked
data-ls-ignore.
Your usage box and the Usage page show this month’s count. See Usage for what happens at your limit.
Estimating your events
Each visit makes about one event for every page someone sees and every thing they click. Add one for each link click and named moment.
For example, 10,000 visits a month where people see 3 pages and click 2 things make about 50,000 events. That is Growth’s monthly allowance.
When events show up
Events show up within a second or two. Pages, Analytics and the Board update on their own.
Events that arrive while Link Studio is closed are kept for up to 30 days and show up as soon as you open it again.
FAQs
Is a visitor the same as an event in Link Studio?
No. In Link Studio a visitor is one person on one browser, and every page they see and every thing they click is a separate event.
Why did one click make two events in Link Studio?
The button is tagged with data-ls-event, so Link Studio records a button click and a named moment for that one click.
Do Stripe and Shopify sales count as Link Studio events?
Yes. Everything a connected tool sends counts as a Link Studio event, like a click or a page view. A sale, trial or renewal is one event, but some come with more: a Stripe or Polar checkout also records when checkout started, so a paid checkout makes two. RevenueCat and Superwall also send first opens or installs, and Superwall sends paywall views. A sign up from a sign-up tool makes two or three.
Does a returning visitor count again in Link Studio?
Yes, as new events. When someone comes back, Link Studio counts their new page views and clicks as new events, and they are still one visitor.
What happens when I reach my Link Studio event limit?
Your links keep working. On paid plans Link Studio keeps counting for another 2,000 events, then stops until the 1st of next month or until you upgrade. Starter stops at exactly its limit. See When you reach a limit.
