# Build your own board

> Learn the Select, Hand and Connect tools, the trays and the Box, Text and Comment buttons in the Board toolbar.

The toolbar at the bottom of the Board has three tools, three trays and three buttons. The tools decide what happens when you click and drag. The trays are where you add cards, and the buttons add boxes, text and comments.

## The toolbar

| Button | Key | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Select | V | Pick, move and edit cards. This is the tool you use most. |
| Hand | H | Move around the Board and open the details of a card. |
| Connect | L | Draw a line from one card to another. |
| Links |  | Opens your links so you can add them. See [Adding links and pages](https://linkstudio.link/docs/adding-cards/). |
| Pages |  | Opens your tracked pages and conversions. |
| Blocks |  | Adds Winner, Revenue, Total, Conversion and Target. See [Blocks that do the maths](https://linkstudio.link/docs/blocks/). |
| Box | S | Adds a box to group cards. See [Text, boxes and comments](https://linkstudio.link/docs/notes-and-boxes/). |
| Text | T | Adds a heading or a label. |
| Comment | C | Pins a comment on the Board or on a card for your team. |

> **Note:** Press **Esc** at any time to close a tray, clear what is selected and go back to the Select tool.

## Select or Hand?

Both tools let you look around the Board. The difference is what happens when you press on something.

| When you | Select (V) | Hand (H) |

| Drag on empty space | Draws a selection box | Moves the Board |
| Drag a card | Moves the card | Moves the Board, the card stays put |
| Click a card | Selects it and shows its toolbar | Opens its details on the right |
| Double click a block | Opens its settings | Opens its settings |

Use **Select** when you are building: adding, moving, grouping and tidying. Use **Hand** when you are reading: moving around and checking the numbers behind a card.

> **Tip:** Holding **Space** turns the Select tool into the Hand for as long as you hold it. Let go to carry on selecting.

## Using the Select tool

- **Click a card** to select it. It turns orange. Pages, conversions, text, boxes and blocks also show a small toolbar above them. Links don’t, so press **Delete** to remove one.
- **Drag a card** to move it. When it comes close to lining up with a card it’s connected to, it settles in line so the line between them runs straight.
- **Drag on empty space** to draw a selection box. Every card and line it touches is selected.
- **Drag any selected card** to move the whole selection together.
- **Press Delete** to take everything that is selected off the Board.
- **Click selected text** to type in it. **Double click a block** to open its settings.

## Using the Hand tool

- **Drag anywhere** to move the Board, even when you start on a card.
- **Click a link, page, conversion or block** to open its details. See [Opening the details of a card](https://linkstudio.link/docs/live-map/#details).
- Nothing moves or changes by accident, so it is the safe tool for showing the Board to someone.

## Using the Connect tool

Pick **Connect**, or press **L**, then drag from one card to another. You can also click the first card and then the second.
